What would you like to know?

FAQ

What ages do you teach?

I teach beginning through advanced flutists.  Students from 3rd grade through college are welcome here.

What is the format of your lessons?

Lessons take place at my studio near Burr Ridge. They are weekly and either a half hour or 45 minutes in length, depending on the maturity and interest of the student. Longer lessons are available for advanced students, typically high school upperclassmen planning to study music in college.

Do you teach year-round?

I have a school year schedule that goes from late August to the end of May. I also offer a 10-week summer session that is more flexible and laid-back.

What topics do you cover during lessons?

  • Tuning techniques

  • Warm-ups

  • Note reading and fingerings

  • Breath control and intonation

  • Tone production

  • Solo music

  • Ensemble music such as duets

  • Band music

  • Theory concepts such as keys, intervals, chords and rhythm

  • Music History

Do you also teach piccolo?

Absolutely! Any student who can play in the 3rd octave on the flute is welcome to start working on piccolo.  We can incorporate it into their flute lesson time and even extend their lesson time if they get more serious about piccolo.

Do you have recitals for your students?

Yes! At least once per year I have a recital where parents, family members and friends can hear students play a solo with a pianist, an ensemble with other students, or both!

What other performance opportunities do your students have?

Between studio recitals and the performances and contests that schools offer, many students do not have the time or desire to do more.  However, I am a member of a number of professional organizations that hold contests for interested students. I am also happy to help students enter local contests and audition for local youth symphonies.
